Getting Government to debate Outdoor Centre closures

"One in three Local Authority outdoor education centres are facing closure (some have already closed) which could mean large numbers of young people are denied potentially life-changing experiences, at a time when health, physical activity and contact with nature are all declining. Some children from poorer and disadvantaged groups may not have another opportunity to share a night away from home and visit places they would not otherwise see.

The sad fact is that closure need not happen, in many cases given extra time these centres could become self sufficient. If centres close they may not reopen again.

You can help by signing our petition, set up by the FSC with the support of Association for Heads of Outdoor Education Centres, English Outdoor Council, Institute for Outdoor Learning and National Association of Field Studies Officers. If we reach 100,000 signatures this year the issue will be considered for debate in the House of Commons.

Tyne Tour 2011 completed

This last weekend we helped out at the Tyne Tour weekend. Based at Tyne Green at Hexham, it celebrates the opening weekend of the closed angling season. Normally a release of water from Kielder guarantees water, bring on the paddlers! As ever it was a great chance to meet up with all our regular customers, as well as meeting new customers.

This year we took loads of Demo boats, the creekboats and Mohawks white water Open canoes were available free to paddle for the day
we also had a selection of playboats from Jackson and Fluid, which were used on the flatwater by our stand, and some greatr offer boats available from our Sale lists

We took some clothing we had on offer from Sweet. we have a few bits remaining, please give us a call .

As it was a bit nippy all the beanies went early

We had some new boats on offer. This Pyranha Burn is in the limited edition Bubble gum colour, and was swallowed up later in the weekend by another customer. Unfortunately as it wasn’t red Matt didn’t buy it. He was the best man for Joe Alexander who chose to run the North Tyne early on Saturday before getting married later that day. Good Luck!

We had the new Nookie Iceman Thermals on show, together with the Booicore Changing Poncho proved popular thoughout the weekend

The weather was clear and cold in the morning, turning warmer in the afternoon
Dagger, Wavesport and Pyranha kayaks were also available to demo straight from the manufacturers or importers, we took the new Dagger Mamba 8.1 which had just been completed straight onto the demo fleet. give us a call to give it a paddle!

Always the first complete weekend in November look out for details in the new year.

We packed up just in time to catch the sunset on the drive back over to Cumbria. our next event is the Open Canoe Symposium based at Lakeside YMCA on Windermere this weekend see you there!

Tyne Tour 2011

Its November soon, which must mean its Tyne Tour Time! as ever we will be on Tyne Green at Hexham all weekend 4th to 6th November. Why not come along and see us. This year we will have more demo and ex Demo boats available to use, or buy. plus a selection of white water goodies for you to purchase. We will also have some Open Boating kit too.

If you want to borrow a demo boat, please bring a form of photo id - passport or driving licence which you will leave with us, and collect when you bring the boat back.

We can only bring a selection of kit we will work as a mini shop we cannot bring everything - we never bring shoes for example as they are too easily muddied (and muddled). but if there is something you want please give us a call before the event, OR let one of our staff know by Saturday 4pm, and we will get it up for Sunday morning for you from the Carlisle Branch.

By the magic of modern technology we accept cards, as well as cash on the weekend!

Delivering boats. Lake District Style

Sometimes I feel lucky living where I do. Recently I was able to deliver some kayaks to one of our customers in the morning, then on the way home paddle on the biggest lake in England.

it all started quite early for a day off, a trailer full of Atlantic, and Atlantic LVs all in plastic, with my open on the car.

With the sea kayaks carefully dropped off in their new home, it was decision time, with the whole of the lakes, and even Lancaster Canal a possibility. As I now live in the North of Cumbria, most of my paddling is done in the nothern lakes, so the south it was! I drove round Windermere to a small free car park on the west side of Windermere, even on a friday is was still full of dog walkers and mountain bikers....

It started out misty and remained so all day, with thicker cloud to the north over Ambleside, which fortunately didn't come to anything.

At this time of year it is generally mirror flat, with just the launches to disturb the autumnal colours.

Its been a couple of weeks since I last got out in the Novacraft Prospector, having now bought a fast glass kayak my time is divided! At 15 ft its a bit of a compromise on the lakes (ie its slower than the Marine fit kayak!) but I soon got into the rythym of single blading again

Ambleside was the destination for lunch,a mug of tea for warmth, and a butty or too for sustanance. As always the wind picked up for the return journey, not before I had a quck look up the Rothay and Brathay for a bit of moving water action.

I only saw one other canoe all day on the water, even Wray Castle was quiet. why not make the most of the midweek and get out paddling

Song of the paddle big meet

Last weekend Pete, and Joe from the Lancaster shop attended the Song of the Paddle Forum Big meet at Ullswater. Song of the Paddle is the biggest Open Canoe Forum in the UK, with paddlers coming from all over the UK, as well as lots of our existing more local paddlers.

Driving to Ullswater via Stockport enabled me to pick up the big box van full of demo boats, together with a full trailer I had 17 demo Open Canoes available from Novacraft, Mohawk, Venture Canoes, and Mad River. Together with the Importers for Wenonah and Gatz we put on an impressive display.

With a windy forecast it was always going to be a social event with not much lake or tripping paddling being done. A lot of demoing of boats took place, with swanky ultralight Wenonah tandems, and low line solos proving most popular. I managed to jump in a few boats, and am now closer to purchasing a solo superfast lake tourer.

We were based at Waterside Farm on a field right on the water, facilities were basic (apart from the butty van!) but clean and tidy, the site also provided a marquee for evening entertainment with a bar! a curry was laid on on saturday night.

After a night of storms, and continual rain on sunday, we beat a hasty retreat to drop the van and trailer back at stockport where it looked really quite nice weather!

A successful event, but maybe we need to avoid the same time of year (I remember doing the Morecambe bay classic windsurfing event on this weekend, and it was always windy.....)

New By Pass Half Open

The New By-pass is today half open round Carlisle. This means a slightly shorter route to the shop ,as well as several other ways of getting to the shop. Just to add to the confusion, there are even more signs for Kingmoor Park!

For anyone coming from the M6 Junction 44 (from the South, North and East) Take the A595. at the first roundabout turn right sp Rockliffe, keep to outside lane past ASDA (traffic lights straight on), and as normal in 600 yards turn left and left into Kingmoor Business park ,throught the raising barrier, down to a t junction and turn right, we are on the left hand side

For anyone coming from Carlisle, and the west coast, please stick to the original directions, unless you know the roads. (turn left after bp garage, tstraight over 2 roundabouts, then outside lane SP Rockcliffe, then as above)

The full Carlisle bypass is due to open possibly by the end of 2011 open accross the river Eden, thus enabling everyone from the west coast easy access to the shop (and the motorway!)

Novacraft Canoes now in stock

After a short delay, we have now received our summer stock of Novacraft. We currently have good stocks of SP3s, Bob Specials, Pals, Prospector 15 and 16s, give us a call to get one reserved before they all go!

Amongst the delivery of Royalex, I got my boat - a Prospector 15
Red in royalex light. On Monday I took it out on its maiden voyage on Loch Ken. Fortunately I managed to dodge the showers, but still encountered lots of wind, as normal coming straight down the loch, giving me good feedback on how the boat reacts to trim. Paddling into the wind, with the 80 Litre Watershed Dry pack right at the front, I found the boat well balanced, without the need to add more weight, or evensir forward of the yoke. Downwind, relaxing on the seat, with the dry pack moved back under the yoke was equally stable.

With the loch higher than normal summer levels, I also took the boat onto the River Black Water of Dee to get used to the moving water characteristics, with a few eddies to hop back and forward the boat is very forgiving and manoeverable, and will make ideal tool for use in summer and winter, there will also be room for tandem paddling, thanks to a high freeboard.

Just the kneeling thwart and sailing kit to fit, and I will be ready forjust about anything

Loch Ken is a great quiet loch, about 90 minutes drive from the shop, its an ideal location if the lakes are too busy, there are lots of things to do, with campsites on the Loch, a descent of the River Dee, and Loch Ken is a nice overnight trip, or day trips from the old railway bridge gives options south or north depending on wind direction. there is also some scenic walking in the woods to the west, and 3 of the 7 staines mountain biking routes within 30 minutes drive. Please note the Blackwater of Dee is normally too low and rocky to get to the point of usefull moving water to play on. and, after I took a quick walk up looked to be a good greade 3 with no eddies at least 500m further up.

Look out for me, or Craig the Shop Manager from Lancaster who has a new burgundy 15 in royalex on the local rivers,and lakes.

This week we have taken delivery of kit from a new supplier - so we are now stocking Humminbird Fish finders, Power Monkey rechargers, Minn Kota Electric Engines, Icom Radios for safety at sea, Garmin GPS Units, and Epirb Satalite "get out of jail" emergency location devices.

We also have the New Guidebook for the seas around our local area - the Irish Sea, and North East Coast available in store.Why not pick up a new North Shore Atlantic in Plastic or Glass at the same time? We have a Tempest 170, and a Zephyr 16 on offer too at £999 (each)

For the Open Boater we have the Novacraft Prospector SP3 selling fast but still available ex stock. For something lighter our Container of Royalex Canoes will be landing in the next week, or we have the Camper 16, and Charles River 163 for the family, and the Wenonah Prospector 15 all come back in stock.

We still have the Wavesport Project X 56 demo boat here in carlisle, its proved very popular with a 100% sucess level (everyone that has paddled one has bought one)

With the Sun shining we have just had our weekly stock delivery, so we have Perception Scooters in stock, as well as a full range of inflatables.

Talkin Tarn 2011 Water Day

Once again Pete, Antony, and new starter Kieran from Carlisle together with Mike and Colin (back with the company) from Stockport provided demo kit for the Talkin Tarn Demo Day on the 5th June 2011.

With Open Canoes, Sea Kayaks, Touring Boats, Sit on tops, General Purpose kayaks, White Water Kayaks and Stand Up Paddle Boards, those turning up had a load of choice to try.

The day is a mixture of fixed "try it Sessions" with 7 sessions through the day where you could come and try paddlesports. with the help of Carlisle Canoe Club who were on had to offer safety cover and handy tips for the new starters.

We also had enough boats of different styles to offer a normal demo day experience with several groups spending all day trying different kayaks and canoes out. The new Wavesport Project X proving very popular, but also Sea Boats from Tahe, the New Valley Etain in plastic and glass, North Shore Aspect and the Perception Essence all got rave reviews which is great for new boats. we also had kit from Dagger, Ocean Kayak, Starboard, Big Dog, Liquid Logic, Robson, Novacraft, Mowhawk, Old Town, Clearwater, and Jackson

With an average of 30 boats on the water at any one time, once again our thoughts of too many boats proved wrong!

The weather was certainly mixed, but was definately better than last year! We have already had a few couples in buying boats, as well as new members for the Canoe Club, and some enquiries for lessons the day was well worth it for all concerned. Thanks for everyones help (we even managed to score a free sausage roll from the Cafe at the end of the day too!

Talkin Tarn Demo Day 2011

We will be holding a Canoe and Kayak Demo Day on Sunday 5th of June. If you have always wanted to give canoeing or kayaking a go please come along. Bring a change of clothes, we will provide paddles buoyancy aids etc. Or if you are more experienced come along with your own kit and try some different boats out

The Event runs from 10am till 4pm, and is based at Talkin Tarn near Brampton, Just off the A69. The Event is free, apart from the normal parking fees.

We will have a selection of our Demo fleet available for you to try, While we cannot guarantee any particular boat we will do our best.

The Day is run as a water day for the tarn, so it will also be possible to try sailing, rowing, and model boats, as well as our normal full fleets of Canoes, Sit on tops, Sea kayaks, Touring boats, general Purpose boats and White Water Kayaks. Please bring any kit you may have if you are trying boats out.

Canyoneering Boots

As the evenings start to draw out, everyone seems to be coming in buying new footwear. Our Pre-season ordering is starting to come in We have had a large number of out local Mountain Rescue team at Penrith Ordering out Five 10 Canyoneers, Stock will start arriving in April, give us a call to reserve yours. These are still the daddies of all boots for MRT work, safety and rescue, as well as canoeing, but are quite bulky for use in smaller playboats. Look out for the SRT Canyoneers coming soon as well - the grand daddies!

We have also just had our first drop of the new Keen Gorge river boot, these are lower profile with a grippy, but smaller sole system to enable you to get in most kayaks. If they are anything like the rest of the Keen range, they will prove very popular.

Coming soon will also be some Artistic Kayaker Pro boots, whilst we always keep good stock of the Rock Boot from Typhoon, and the Palm Gradient shoe

Halton Demo Day POSTPONED

Brookbank Lancaster Halton Demo Day CANCELLED

Due to the current weather Halton rapids is now well into spate conditions, meaning it would not be sensible or safe to continue with running the day. We will do our best to spread this information at such short notice but if you know of people who were going to be attending the demo please could you pass this information out to save them the wasted trip.

This Sunday 6th of February from 10- 4 our Lancaster Branch will be having a Demo Day, Based at the Halton Rapids, on the River Lune near Lancaster they will have a large number of the latest demo white water kayaks, and canoes for you to try.see here for the UK Rivers Guidebook description unfortunately its not a venue for beginners - we will be having a Demo day at Talkin Tarn later in the year that will cover all flat water paddling areas.

~~As well as all our normal full range of white water kayaks including the Zet Raptor, we will have a full selection of all our Mohawk white water Canoes, for anyone to try, so if you fancy a~~ ~~wet challenging paddle then come on down.~~

The event will be run from a car park at the top of Mill Lane next to Halton Rapids on river right of the Lune. It is just off junction 34 of the M6 at Lancaster and I have attached a map to assist paddlers with the location of where the event will be run from and where vehicles can be parked during the event.

Please bring your own paddling kit, paddlers will be paddling at their own risk and should be competent to paddle to the conditions of the water on the day and safety or instruction will not be supplied by Brookbank.

After the cold

Well that was cold!! and it was my hand shaking**!.... the picture was taken yesterday morning - I won't miss de-icing the inside of my car!.

I know a lot of customers have been struggling in the deep, crisp and even stuff (remember Kayaks make super fast sledges (if a little dangerous ones! so this is not an endorsement.....!))

The good news is that the shop has been warm throughout the cold spell.and at least for the next couple of days all the roads are clear in Carlisle, and we are forecast to be above zero.

We have had still managed a lot of deliveries of customer and Stock Boats, Kit and Accessories in the cold spell. So it is well worth coming in soon to make sure you have all your Christmas Presents ready for the big day (even if they are for yourself!). Or just type Christmas into the search button on the right hand side of our home page.

North East Sea Angling and Boat Show

In the second weekend of November, we sent the Brookbank big van over to the North East again,

this time we had a specific plan in mind to show off our huge range of Sea Kayak Fishing Kayaks,Dry Suits, Buoyancy Aids, Paddles, and Accessories at the Annual North East Sea Angling and Boat Show, based at Nissan in Washington

Pete and Mick from the Carlisle shop were manning the show all weekend, and after setting up on Friday using the normal principle that no van should be left empty, the full display was ready for Saturday and Sunday

The most popular items were the Hobie Pro Angler , less a kayak, more a small boat, even the most water phobic anglers were lusting over it with its great stability, and capacity, expect it on water near you judging by the demand and interest it gathered over the weekend,

the Sealect Stand with all the small hard to find bits and pieces for canoeing and kayaking all in one piece, (This stand is currently living at the Stockport Branch, but look out for them in all the shops in the new year.)

and the Vast array of Scotty rod holders

We spent the weekend talking to enthusiasts, as well as potential new recruits into the sport, plus all the other exhibitors ranging from Angling Shops, through the big manufacturers, and clubs,

all the way to, well Nissan vehicles!

Its Tyne tour weekend next weekend. 5-7th November.

Once again we will be based at Tyne Green from Friday to Sunday. We will be based from our Marquee (look out for the big white Brookbank Vans).

We will take a lot of our white water kayak (and Canoe) demo fleet with us which you can try on tour (as long as you fill in the forms and leave a form of ID) or borrow for a 10 minute blast.

We will also have our shop in a tent, so bring your credit card! let us know if you have a specific item you want to pick up

Surf weekend

Carlisle Canoe Club were having there annual surf weekend, so it seemed the perfect time to take out a few demos from the shop and give them a trial in the sea.

The club headed over to Embleton on the north east coast, just south of beadnell bay, the surf forcast looked ok for the weekend with 5 to 6 foot breaking waves predicted.
We took over a couple of the Starboard stand up paddle boards and the Fluid Element , and decided to take out the starboards first.
After 10 minutes we all decided that 5 foot surf was not the ideal conditions to try to learn how to surf stand up paddle boards, i did manage to get out once and found myself quickly walking off the back of the board as the wave broke and the board shot forward.
The Surf on saturday was the bigger of the two days but was not as clean as sunday, the element preformed as well as could be expected, with only a couple of times when i found myself paddling out to be faced with a a wall of water thinking i should of waited for this wave to break and ended up looped over and then rolling up before the next wave came.

After surfing on saturady we headed to Seahouses for fish and chips and stayed on a really nice campsite there that is highly recomended.
More of the club members headed down on the sunday and we hand another hard day of surfing, but we decided not to take out the boards and just stick to the boats after what happened the day before.
The Element handled better on the sunday it the condition giving me longer runs and carving around on the shallow breaks, but the conditions didn't lend themselves to much else.

Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and hopefully a few more trips might be planned on the back of this.

Kanumesse 2010

Eight managers from the Brookbank group headed to Nuremberg for a couple of days ~~holiday~~ hard slog looking at the new products for summer 2011. The show was called the Kanumesse, and is turning into the largest trade only show in the world for canoeing and kayaking. This year there were also a lot of stand up paddleboards on display. There were a few things that came out of it;

Some prices will be going up next year. Along with the VAT change to 20%, there has been significant price rises where the goods are being made (China mostly).
Whilst some products are changing, a lot of the kit will be staying the same at least until the middle of 2011.

All this means the next couple of months will be an excellent time to look at our online store and bag some bargains.

As Normal we flew into Munich from Manchester. The only glitches being an hour delay at the start (enabling our annual quiz with quiz master Mark), plus arriving just after a Russian flight (delays getting through customs). Soon after we were on the unlimited Autobahn with two cars, and only one satnav... An hour and a half later we arrived at our rather nice budget hotel for late night drinks.

For the duration of the event we were at the show from 9am till 6pm talking about as well as looking at canoeing and kayaking kit from our suppliers Peak, Palm, Perception, Yak, System X, Streamlite, Gatz, Prijon, North Shore, Valley, Big Dog, Old Town, Jackson, Fluid, Hobie, Reed, Mad River, Dagger, Tahe, and Typhoon, plus a few new Brands (watch this space!).

We managed to navigate our way back down the Autobahn without the sat-nav and back to the right airport, where I discovered it was safer to drive at 130kph, than 110kph (it’s closer to the speed of the other cars!), and all safely home in time for a curry....

Staff reviews - Brookbank style

This week we are having our regular reviews, with both our directors Mark and Lorna up in Carlisle. As we are a paddling company we had to go paddling, Fortunately we had a good selection of Stand Up Paddleboards from Starboard, as well as our Mohawk short white water canoes (spec boats)

First up were the White water canoes, we had the Viper 12, Probe 13, XL 13 plus the Solo 13 for comparison as a more traditional stye of open canoe. We all had a go in all of the boats, and while they all look similar at first glance, they suit different standards of paddlers and different paddler weights.

The XL is a very forgiving boat that traditional open boaters will have no problem paddling, the Viper is at the other end of the scale being a bit edgier and the more advanced kayaker had a great time in. the Probe fits neatly in the middle.

the Solo while looking like a trad boat still has the great secondary stability of the other boats.

After a quick swap round we were out on the Stand Up Paddleboards. Having had a river trip earlier in the year, we now had more of a chance to push the limits a bit more, so frequent dunkings were the order or the day as we practiced turning. on the flatter water, they are a great fitness idea - engaging the whole body

By the end of the day we were all a bit tired!!

Song of the Paddle Big Meet

Last weekend Mike from the Stockport branch and Pete from the Carlisle met up with about 150 members of the Song of the Paddle online forum to help at their "big meet" based on our local lake - Ullswater.

Along with Gatz, Mad River Canoes, and Our own Mohawk Brands we also took some Wenonah and Novacraft canoes for members to try out over a wet and windy weekend. All the boats got on the water. we also had a mix of paddles to try including our excellent Mitchell white water paddles which provedmore than capable of getting even the biggest canoes moving into the strong headwinds.

We were based at Waterside Farm, and basically took over their best field right on the lakeshore, with a mixture of teepees, and lightweight backpacking tents.... everyone with a canoe or two, and a Tarp for company. I camped on top of the hill, and the pic above shows us taking over the field early saturday morning. We used the back of our big Sprinter van to display our mini shop, and this worked well. as the video shows

All in all a great weekend, I even managed to paddle every single boat available (even if it was just a short spin in the Mowhawk playboats!) with some myths being overcome.

It was great to meet up with a lot of new and exisiting friends, as well as critique Ben from Palms work art outfitting his legend 15!

We are one of only a few Shops to stock these excellent bars, and can supply the common systems ex stock, both square bar and aerobars are available. Why not Order the correct bar when you order your new Canoe or Kayak. (Thule are able to get an exact to fit 99% of cars if may take up to 3-4 days for an exact fit)

We also stock fitting kits for different cars so you need only replace parts when you change, and not the whole bar. Straps, uprights, J bars and kayak loading systems are also available.

We can also supply other non watersports Thule accessories such as Cycle Carriers, and roof boxes

River levels are now at record lows.... BUT the environment agency has finally published real time data for river levels in England and Wales. the data is in its rawest state, expect interpretation websites coming soon.

This catches up to Scotland who have been doing it for years. Paddlers have interpreted the data here

Talkin Water Day

On Sunday we had our annual demo / Water day up at Talkin Tarn near Brampton. With a damp forecast (in between days of warm sunshine) we feared the worse. As it turned out we got a big turnout of enthusiastic paddlers. Thank you to everyone for giving it a go and ignoring the weather conditions.

We always put on a mix of introducing complete novices to Kayaking and Canoeing, as well as a traditional demo day for more experienced paddlers.

The introductory sessions were packed with 18 people in 6 sessions, with a few extra people for good measure (till we ran out of Buoyancy Aids!) everyone seemed to have a great time, with even the smallest paddlers having a go in the modern playboats. The General Purpose boats such as the Dagger Approach, Liquid Logic Remix Xp10, Robson Moonster, and the Perception Scooter Sit on top seemed very well liked.

Amongst our existing customers a lot tried out Stand Up Paddle Boarding for the first time, everyone had a smile on their faces. By using existing paddle strokes the boards can be moved at great speed with little effort. The Ocean Kayak Nalu, and the Big Paddle Co and Starboard ranges were all well used throughout the day.

At several points during the day all our composite and plastic sea boats were out on the water with lots of enthusiasm about the new Designs from Tahe Marine, and our best selling composites from North Shore. Our small but perfectly formed Open boat fleet was also used by families, couples and individuals with the Wenonah Prospector , Novacraft Pal and Prospector SP3 all going down well.

Looking at the figures we had 300 people in on and by the water, despite the fact it rained continually through the day, they breed them hardy up north...

Talkin Tarn is a great location, just off the A69 running from Carlisle to Newcastle, and so attracted people from all over the north of England and the Scottish Borders. It is a one Kilometre round, and allows launching of all non powered watercraft, as well as having clean changing rooms and a great cafe overlooking the Tarn. Normally its not quite as busy as it was on Sunday!

Thanks to Chris and Dan from the Stockport Branch we had two trailers and two very large van fulls of kit to try. Next stop for the kit is this Saturday down in London. Click here for details

Demo Day @ Talkin Tarn 13th June

We will be having our annual Try it / Demo Day on the 13th of June based at Talkin Tarn near Brampton from 10:30 - 4:30pm.

You will be able to try the sport for the first time, (with 18 spaces in 45 minute blocks throughout the day) OR with a more traditional demo day if you want to compare boats.

As in previous years the demo fleet is coming together nicely with

Sea kayaks from North Shore, Tahe and Valley.
Open canoes from Wenonah, Novacraft, Clearwater, Gatz, Old Town,
Sit on tops from Hobie Kayaks, Ocean Kayak, Teksport and Perception,
Angling Sit on tops from Ocean Kayak and Hobie.
General Purpose kayaks from perception, Daggerm Liquid Logic and Robson
some playboats and river runners from Jackson, Dagger,Liquid Logic, Fluid and Wavesport
Stand Up Paddle boards from Starboard, Ocean Kayak, and Red Paddle Co
A few of our second hand boats may be available (unless we have sold them before hand)

Please bring your normal paddling kit with you, though we will have a selection of paddles for you to try.we cannot guarantee any one boat being available, but will do our best if you have any specific requirements

We will have an experienced team off the water, as well as members of our local Canoe Club (Carlisle CC) to help with safety and offer advice on the water

Stand up and be counted

Last night we after closing we went paddling, this time we took some open canoes, and some stand up paddleboards.

If you haven't heard of them, or paddled one, why not talk to us as we have a couple in Carlisle at the moment. we did a 7 kilometre paddle on one of our local rivers, but due to low water levels it was a bit slower, but enabled us to paddle as the sun was setting.

At the get in everyone was getting used to the boards - come more naturally than others. We had boards from Starboard Red Rock, and Ocean Kayak

Terrain varied from wide open, to narrow channels, water levels just about manageable with hardly any walking needed. the board proved very adaptable - you can stand on them, you can kneel with them, or you can sit and paddle. the general consensus is they are easy to paddle with a bit of instruction to get you started, basic canoe strokes work well. I also think the lads will be a bit tired today as they go for different muscles than paddlers normally use - core stability, balance and legs! rather than just top half, so a complete body workout!

Sunset was rather nice!

Do you Ken Loch Ken?

After a Busy Saturday in the Shop, I thought I would load up to paddle one of the Lake District lakes in the demo Wenonah Prospector 15 we have at the moment. After I checked my kit early-ish on Sunday, I saw I didn't have a Buoyancy Aid, Cag, boots.... time for a change of plan

Back to the shop to pick up the items I needed, and I realised Loch Ken was only just over an hours drive away, about the same as the Lakes, So a quiet paddle was on.

Well Loch Ken is really nice. It can be prone to wind but today is was completely calm. I launched easily from the Viaduct (just by Loch Ken Holiday park) from here you can paddle south and do some island hopping, or go onto the river system, or go north through the motorboating area to more great loch paddling.

After a good mooch around to the north, and lunch with some Canada Geese all in perfect sunshine, with 2 motorboats and 2 sit on tops seen all day, time for tea and home.

Today I was Paddling a Wenonah Prospector 15, and I really liked it, even as a solo boat it works well, nice and stable easy to lean over and tracks really well in er no wind what so ever!! Will make an excellent canoe for two people. I just think for solo paddling the 16 ft boat is a bit narrower so makes off side stokes a bit easier. The boat is still here in Carlisle ready to be hired out, along with our growing fleet ready for the summer

I drove back via Castle Loch near Lockerbie which looks an ideal location for one of our evening paddles - just off the M74 and about 25 minutes from the shop.

We now have a good mixture of Open Boats, Playboats, Touring and Sea Kayaks ready to hire out for you. so if you need or want to try our canoeing and kayaking give us a call 01228 531703

Cool Derwentwater

Well its been ages since I was out doing paddling, we have just received the new Clearwater Kawartha in stock, plus no-one has demoed it yet, and it wasn't too cold on Sunday....

So I went paddling!

There was a bit of icebreaking to be done!

and it was a bit misty/murky

but it was good to get out.
Met up with a pair in a plastic canoe too, and we went for a paddle up the Derwent. Managed to keep up successfully in the Kawartha, and tried out a couple of paddles, and the pole.
The Kawartha tracked well with any of them, but stood up paddling needs a bit more balance than me at the moment! Solid outfittings and light to carry (compared to most Plastic canoes) the boat will be a good seller especially to lake paddlers. at 15ft 6 it is eay to transport and carry around.

We managed to get up to the footbridge and beyond for a break. I returned to the car still dry, and got home for 2pm! its great having local lakes, plus the car park was not full!!

Same location this Sunday, this time its my Novacraft Cronje all set up for sailing! (no wind forecast but still...)

Well daytime temperatures are finally above freezing, and its starting raining..... Here in the shop we have been rearranging a bit just to make things even more open. We have adjusted the Open boat, sea kayak and sit on top accessories. (spot the Wood Trim Wenonah Prospector in the background!!)

We have just had our first delivery of the year, and on it were the new Kawartha open canoes from Clearwater, On first inspection they look great value for money at £699.

Take a look at the specs here, or come in to have a sit in one. Available in green, red or yellow.

Nice and light for a plastic Open Canoe, as well as a bit narrower than other boats we have in stock, so should make a great solo boat, but still wide enough to paddle comfortably two up.
